How Hollywood is getting POC representation all wrong in a movie where even aliens should be more represented!

Note from – BeyondElo, Hello dear followers. Yes BC.com is back. and here’s the first blog post in one year wrote by my dear co-writer : TK. Lots of love and gossips y’all! I went to see Ghostbusters when it came out, even if I originally hadn’t planned too. I was pleasantly surprised, as it was hilarious – especially the first part. It was also the first time I was introduced to Leslie Jones. (ghostbusters.com) Ghostbusters has been plagued from bad press since way before it came out. First by the “nostalgics” who couldn’t understand the gender-bender remake, threatening to go en masse to Rotten Tomatoes to add bad critics as well as boycotting the movie. Then it was all about Leslie Jones… Why was she the only member of the group who is not a scientist, but a “street-smart” POC character? Fast forward to a few weeks ago, when Leslie got public, saying that no designer came forward to dress her for the premiere. Enters Christian Siriano, who came to the rescue, and I have to say that she …
I like Lupita Nyong’o. Everyone does, right? She’s great. This is not about her. It’s about what you might call the white liberal construction of Lupita Nyong’o. Lupita Nyong’o’s riveting performance in 12 Years a Slave skyrocketed the 31-year-old newcomer to the Hollywood A-list. Millions of women rejoiced at the prospect of a stunning woman of color becoming the belle of the ball, and the news that she’d been tapped by Lancôme cosmetics to be their new brand ambassador.
This week I did something I haven’t done in years : I watched Paris Fashion Week live Shows. Lanvin, Etam, H&M, Balmain, Balenciaga, etc. Fashion was great and the celebs were entertaining. Then I got really furious. Furious about two things, well three actually : Models were freakingly skinny I could count on one hand the number of models that weren’t white. I realized that there are things that doesn’t change.
How f*cking cute is Steve McQueen? The jumping up and down? It was indeed a director/film split between Gravity and 12 Years A Slave with Alfonso Cuaron taking Best Director and the right film being immortalized. Steve Mc Queen Steve McQueen wins best motion picture for 12 Years A Slave “I dedicate this to all the people who have endured slavery and for the 21 million people still suffering slavery today. Everybody deserves not just to survive, but to live.” – Powerful words to end on. McQueen is my director revelation. I discovered his work with Shame. Which I shamely enjoyed and adored. I love his way to transcribe emotions and I love the sensibility and the deepness he uses to address subjects such as slavery (12 Years A Slave), sex addiction (Shame) or excruciating hunger strike (Hunger). 12 Years a Slave may not be the best film about slavery but it was indubitably the best film to see this year. Anne Helen Petersen wrote a great piece on how important it is that you watch 12 years a slave. …
Lupita Nyong’o Career Prospectus Lupita won Best Supporting Actress. And she well deserved it. Her speech was simple yet very inspiring. She had the joy of her life. And I can certainly understand why. Lupita’s Future I read in a discussion yesterday Oscars day that Lupita Nyong’o doesn’t have any films in production at the moment. She’s in that Liam Neeson film, Non-Stop, and then… Nothing? Comparing her trajectory to Jennifer Lawrence, who had a breakout with Winters Bone, followed by mostly quality films, then got not only into one but two franchises, does this smack of racism to anyone else? We all know Hollywood had a case of racism for a long time. And even though 12 Years A Slave won big yesterday and Lupita has had big lights on her since a couple of months, she still might experience difficulties finding new roles in the future. So why does a Black supporting actress winner have to win less than a white best actress? Remember Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis? Or even Jennifer Hudson ? They won big but …
Lovely Lupita Nyong’o is coming on strong. She’s the new fresh girl of 2014 “She’s the most popular girl on the award circuit. Even more popular than Jennifer Lawrence since people (unfairly, arguably) seem to be tired of the Jennifer Lawrence. Lupita is the Lawrence of 2014 and Lawrence is the Hathaway of 2014? Discuss.”_Lainey Gossip Read more about Lupita Nyong’o HERE
Elle US features some of the funniest women on the small screen for its annual Women in TV issue ! Zooey Deschanel, Mindy Kaling, Amy Poehler and Allison Williams each get an individual cover. Zooey Deschanel, wearing typical Valentino, talks about the idea that girliness connotes weakness and how it comes up less and less. Allison Williams, while looking at us sensually, compares her style to Jennifer Anniston’s and shares her strategy about becoming America next Sweetheart (good luck honey!). Amy Poehler is due to win an Emmy and won a Golden Globe last week for her excellent portrayal of Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation. In her ELLE interview she speaks about juggling between actress/producer/writer and mother. However I am mostly excited about seeing Mindy Kaling finally getting a cover !! But is it me or is her cover very different from the rest? She’s the only one in black & white (WTF!) and on top of that she didn’t get a full but only a head shot (WTFF !?!). Anyway Mindy Kaling herself responded to the controversy surrounding the lack …
I was nicely surprised when I saw the new Givenchy campaign featuring Erykah Badu. Not that I don’t see her as fashionable, but I didn’t think she would be the kind of person to hang around Riccardo Tisci‘s circle. Besides in term of muses, he already has Ciara, Mariacarla Boscono & Lea T. Joined by Maria Borges, Riley, and Asia Chow, this campaign can be considered as the first featuring only women of colors. A milestone in the representation of WOC in fashion? Source : rackkandruin.blogspot.fr Read More : Celebrity Endorsement | Lady Gaga x Versace More of Celebrity Endorsements
Lupita : The New Fresh Girl of 2014 Lupita Nyong’o is campaigning hard. She and all the cast of 12 Years a Slave are hunting the Oscar. I first saw Lupita featured on one of my favorite red carpet’s blog : Red Carpet Fashion Awards. I didn’t know who she was and what she was doing on the 12 Years A Slave red carpet but I was floored by her style and natural beauty. I couldn’t wait till another of my favorite fashion blog Tom & Lorenzo , would start featuring her as well. They finally did, and just confirmed what we already knew: her style is flawless, her makeup is flawless and she’s just beautiful! Oscar Campaign Strategy #1 : Being universally beloved [Lupita Nyong’o] is someone who emerged, a revelation, a discovery, a major new talent. She delivers an extraordinary performance in 12 Years A Slave. She’s thoughtfully navigated her first major press and award circuit. She’s become a red carpet star. She’s smart and patient in an industry that rewards impetuous fools._LaineyGossip.com Hopefully this will help …
